LONE PINE: Franklin Merrell Wolff's Great Space Center

Location:
The Great Space Center is spectacularly located at the foot of Mt. Whitney near Lone Pine, California. Lone Pine is located in the central eastern part of California along U. S. Highway 395 near the town of Bishop. The altitude is 6000 feet. Lone Pine is the location of many historic western movies. Every October it is host to a movie festival.
Weather:
The temperatures in this arid foothill chaparral generally are warm days and cool nights. It is warm to hot in the summer; air conditioning is available at Brugh's Base Camp. Weather is beautiful in the spring and fall at 75 to the low 80s. It will be cold in the winter, sometimes with snow. To check weather online use the 93545 area code at www.weather.com.
Accommodations:
The accommodations for Lone Pine conferences are varied:
Brugh's Base Camp has recently been renovated and has ample and continuous solar/generator power and very comfortable rooms.
The Great Space Center itself is rustic and rooms there will have hot water for showers but no elecricity; oil lamps provide light.
There are very comfortable motels close by for those who prefer private rooms. The drive takes about 15 minutes.Note: Accommodations are assigned on a first come, first served basis. Couples will be given priority over singles in the rooms with queen or king beds. Final room assignments will be made two weeks before conference start, when we know the configuration of participants.

General Information:
There are no phones and no laundry facilities. Verizon provides the best cell phone coverage. AT&T is sporadic.
There is plenty of room to hike, take walks and commune with nature in this lovely space.

3 hour drive from the Ontario Airport
4 hour drive from LAX
4 hour drive from Las Vegas
5 hour drive from Reno
We recommend you rent a car, possibly sharing rides. The most beautiful drives are from Las Vegas and Reno.
Skywest Airlines flies to Inyokern, and Avis rents cars there, or about 15 minutes away is Enterprise car rental. The drive to Lone Pine is about an hour.
There is a small aircraft flight to Ridgecrest CA, where you can rent a car for the one-hour drive to Lone Pine. It is expensive and can be arranged through your travel agent.From Lone Pine:
Turn onto Whitney Portal Road and go 3 miles.
Turn left onto Horseshoe Meadows Road and go 2 miles.
Turn right onto Granite View Drive and go 3 miles.
Pass through the gate to the Center and follow the road to the right.
